Numbers tell you the scale. This is what it looks like on the ground.
First and foremost, it was an honor to help ELOI in the endeavor to help youth and adults in the greater Ugandan area through Christ. It was a humbling experience, and one that I will cherish for the rest of my life. At the beginning of the journey I was uncertain about the task that was before me, and yes, I put it in God’s hands and was led by Mr. Tendo Steven and his great staff throughout my stay.
I had the pleasure of working with Pastor Steven Tendo at ELOI as a volunteer. It was such an eye-opener to see how our people, especially vulnerable mothers and babies, suffer while trying to receive healthcare services with scarce resources. We went to Buwenge Healthcare center and administered vaccinations to babies, and provided antenatal and postpartum care to some mothers.

The genuine love and acceptance I experienced made me feel completely at home. Interning with ELOI AFRICA in Uganda challenged me to apply my skills in meaningful ways while learning from an incredibly inspiring community. The warmth, collaboration, and hands-on trust I was given from day one made this internship deeply rewarding. Leaving Oxford for this experience is the best decision I’ve made for my personal and career growth.
Health
Families in the villages around Jinja often traveled hours for basic care. Expectant mothers went without antenatal checkups, and children missed routine vaccinations simply because the nearest clinic was too far, or too costly, to reach.
Since 2013, our partnership with Buwenge Hospital has brought preventive, curative, and health-promotive care including counseling into the community. Mobile outreach now delivers vaccinations and antenatal and postpartum care directly to mothers and babies who once had nowhere close to turn.
Education
For many families, one term’s school fees are simply out of reach. A bad harvest or a medical bill is often all it takes to pull a child out of the classroom for good, sometimes permanently.
Through the Bursary Scheme and Child Sponsorship program, 516 children, 308 girls and 208 boys have stayed in school through primary, secondary, and vocational training, breaking a cycle that would otherwise repeat itself.
Access to Justice
Many youths, women, and men in Uganda sit in police cells, remand homes, and gazetted prisons without ever having a fair hearing, simply because they cannot afford legal representation.
ELOI works alongside justice-system partners to advocate for fair treatment and to support people as they rebuild their lives back in their communities.
Environment & Climate
Unpredictable rainfall threatens the harvests families depend on, while daily cooking over open, three-stone fires fills kitchens with smoke and drives the cutting of indigenous trees for charcoal.
We’re closing that gap through free seedling donations to help replace lost tree cover, hands-on training in making charcoal briquettes as a cleaner alternative fuel, and ongoing advocacy for stronger environmental protection in the communities we serve.
Women Empowerment
Many women in this community lacked a reliable source of independent income and marketable skills, often relying entirely on unpredictable seasonal farming or scarce day labor. This financial dependence made it incredibly difficult to cover basic household needs, afford medical care, or keep their children in school.
Through hands-on skills training — including liquid soap making, resuable pad making, adult literacy, women are gaining a trade they can turn into steady income for their households.
