Today, August 21, 2026, the United Nations marks the ninth International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism under the theme “Healing through Memory”. In parts of East Africa, the physical scars of past insurgencies and cross-border violence may fade, but the invisible psychological trauma remains deeply entrenched across generations.
For rural families in Uganda who have survived regional conflict, displaced family units, or violent loss, true community development cannot occur without trauma-informed psychosocial support.
ELOI’s Integrated Psycho-Social First Aid
At ELOI, health extends beyond treating physical illness. Our field teams incorporate mental health screening and community support circles directly into our primary healthcare outreach:
- Grassroots Support Networks: Field officers coordinate localized peer groups where survivors of past trauma share experiences, preserve community history, and build collective resilience.
- Youth Counseling in Schools: Children who have lost parents to past violence or extreme poverty receive targeted emotional support through our educational outreach teams, helping them process grief and stay focused on their education.
- Clinical Referrals: When individuals present with severe post-traumatic stress or clinical depression, field staff coordinate transport and professional psychiatric assistance through our regional healthcare network.
