While these meals are vital for keeping kids in school, the invisible cost is devastating. Inhaling the thick, trapped smoke in school kitchens exposes cooks and learners to severe respiratory risks, while the massive demand for firewood rapidly accelerates deforestation in vulnerable sub-regions.
At ELOI, we believe that a child’s right to education and nutrition shouldn’t come at the expense of their health or the environment. This July, we are highlighting the urgent need to transition public and community institutions toward sustainable, fuel-efficient institutional cookstoves.
According to regional environmental frameworks, moving away from open-fire cooking can reduce firewood consumption by up to 40–50%, significantly easing the pressure on our local forests and ecosystems.
