The overwhelming majority of public and community schools rely strictly on traditional, open-fire three-stone stoves to cook daily meals for thousands of students, driving severe local deforestation and creating dangerous health environments.
The Ecological and Physiological Toll
The reliance on raw firewood is a dual threat that damages both our natural resources and human health:
- Severe Forest Degradation: The constant search for institutional firewood strips communities of vital tree covers, altering local microclimates and accelerating severe soil erosion across vulnerable agricultural land.
- Toxic Exposure: Trapped woodsmoke exposes school cooks and students to dangerous indoor air pollution, leading to chronic respiratory illnesses, burning eyes, and long-term lung damage.
ELOI’s Clean Technology Interventions
