Prolonged dry spells followed by sudden, violent downpours threaten fragile topsoil, wash away seeds, and reduce crop yields. For rural households that rely entirely on rain-fed agriculture, these environmental shifts directly threaten family food security and household income.

The Cycle of Land Degradation
When land is depleted through continuous farming without soil conservation, the entire community suffers:
- Soil Erosion: Heavy rains wash topsoil into local waterways, stripping the land of essential nutrients.
- Reduced Harvests: Poor soil health leads to declining crop yields, driving up food prices and leaving children vulnerable to malnutrition.
- Deforestation Pressures: Families are often forced to cut down local trees for quick charcoal sales to offset lost agricultural income, worsening environmental damage.
ELOI’s Climate-Smart Solutions
To break this destructive cycle, ELOI works alongside rural farmers to implement practical, sustainable land management techniques:
- Agroforestry & Reforestation: We distribute climate-resilient native trees to smallholders. Planting these trees alongside food crops stabilizes topsoil, creates natural windbreaks, and restores the local water canopy.
- Institutional Cookstove Upgrades: We partner with schools to replace open-fire three-stone stoves with fuel-efficient biomass rocket stoves, cutting institutional firewood use in half and protecting local forests.
- Soil Preservation Training: ELOI field officers train farmer cooperatives in composting, mulching, and rainwater harvesting, ensuring fields stay fertile even during dry spells.
