Clean Air & Safe Births: Healthy Environments in Rural Healthcare

Introduction: Indoor Pollution and Maternal Health

In rural Uganda, indoor air pollution caused by burning firewood and charcoal in unventilated spaces represents a major public health hazard for pregnant mothers, newborns, and young children. Smoke inhalation during domestic cooking causes respiratory illness and complications during pregnancy.

ELOI links community health directly with clean environmental energy to safeguard rural healthcare facilities and homes.

Clean Energy Solutions at Scale

ELOI’s dual approach combines clean energy technology with primary healthcare partnerships:

  • Biomass Rocket Stove Installations: Replacing open fire pits with insulated biomass stoves in rural schools and healthcare centers, reducing wood usage by 50% and eliminating toxic smoke emissions.
  • Buwenge Hospital Partnership (Since 2013): Delivering free prenatal diagnostic screenings, maternal micronutrient kits, and safe delivery support in well-ventilated, solar-powered clinical wards.
  • Tree Nursery Nurseries: Distributing indigenous tree seedlings to rural homesteads to rebuild local forest cover and reduce soil erosion.

Practical Environmental Health Impact

Integrating clean energy into healthcare and household infrastructure protects vulnerable lungs, preserves natural forest ecosystems, and ensures mothers can deliver children in safe, hygienic environments.
